Have you ever sat happily knitting and thought ‘Oh no, I didn’t bring my stitch markers with me’?
As someone who has no qualms about knitting in public, I am often out and about with my projects. With on-the-go knitting, you don’t have the luxury of digging through your yarn corner to find a spare tape measure.
Enter ‘The Knitting Kit’.
Your knitting kit can save you hours of searching for your tapestry needle, giving you more time to focus on the fun bit – actually knitting! Knitting kits can be built over time as you get familiar with the tools you need and don’t need to cost a lot. Here are the seven essentials that are always stocked in my kit for knitting on the go.
1. Small Scissors
A small pair of scissors is a staple of a good knitting kit. Make sure they’re sharp enough for your yarn.
To avoid any accidents, it can be useful to get a pair that comes with a case, maybe speaking from experience here!
2. Stitch Markers
A good selection of different sizes and types of stitch markers makes sure you are covered for any pattern requirements.
Not sure what stitch markers are for? Read my guide here.
3. Tape Measure
Save the estimation and pack a measuring tape. No need to knit a panel longer than it should be!
4. Tapestry Needle
I sometimes ‘forget’ this because I really don’t like sewing up, but a tapestry needle can help finish up a project on the go.
A tapestry needle can also be used to thread sections onto a piece of yarn as a makeshift stitch holder.
5. Cable Needles
A couple of cable needles in different sizes make sure you’re covered for any pattern requirements.
6. Pens & Stationary
Keep some pens and a few post-its in your kit to make a note on a pattern or track your progress.
I usually have a stash of tiny notebooks that I include in my knitting kit.
7. A Bag for the Kit
Find a pretty bag or box to keep your knitting kit in. When it is all together, it makes it much easier to throw in your project bag before you set off.
Where to get Knitting Accessory Kits
You can build up your own knitting kit over time, picking up pieces at craft shops.
Alternatively, you could start with a pre-built kit like this one from Amazon. It’s a great starting point that you can add to over time.
Make your kit your own, including other things you may need like stitch holders or needle point projectors.
